Librarians, Archivists and Directors of Capuchin Museums

Online meeting 2021 between Librarians, Archivists and Directors of Capuchin Museums

On the morning of December 17, 2021 from 10:00 to 12:00, an online meeting in Italian and English was held between Capuchin Librarians, Archivists and Directors of Capuchin Museums organized by the Central Capuchin Library and the Capuchin General Archives.

This informal meeting was called together for the purpose of bridging the distances and addressing logistical difficulties caused by this period of global pandemic, while also taking the opportunity to exchange Christmas and 2022 New Year’s greetings.

The thirty or so participants from different countries (Italy, Spain, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Central Africa, United States), shared their impressions and experiences of the last 22 months marked by the spread of Covid-19.

The difficulties caused by the lengthy lockdowns and social distancing did not bypass the Capuchin cultural institutions, which strived to continue carrying out their responsibilities to the Order, the Church and society in general, while making effective use of the possibilities offered on the World Wide Web. Capuchin Libraries, Archives and Museums have carried out important services via document delivery, virtual visits, readings, conferences and online consultations, and - as soon as it was possible - reopened for in-person consultations and visits. The commitment to ensure safe interaction, with respect to the rules set by authorities, was noteworthy. In the same spirit, reflections were shared on the economic difficulties often met by the Capuchin Friars – like other religious orders and the Church in general – during their daily commitment of preserving, conserving and promoting the religious heritage and the imposing yet extremely sensitive cultural heritage that sits at the heart of the Capuchin mission of evangelization.

As in-person meetings will not likely be possible for still some time, it is intended to follow up this meeting with more online activity, with an eye toward improving the limits encountered during this first meeting due to the different time zones.
