New Mediterranean Conference

From June 22 to 23, 2023, at the International College of St. Lawrence of Brindisi in Rome, the provincial ministers, custodes, delegates and guardians of the 21 provinces (Calabria, Campania-Basilicata, Catalonia, Central Italy, Croatia, Emilia Romagna, Foggia, France, Genoa, Lombardy, Malta, the Marches, Piedmont, Portugal, Apulia, Sardinia-Corsica, Sicily, Slovenia, Spain, Tuscany, Veneto) met together with the 3 custodies (Romania, Italian-speaking Switzerland, Near East), 3 delegations ( Turkey, Greece, Albania) and 2 domus presentiae (Algeria, Jerusalem) who are all working toward the formation of the new Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Capuchin Provincial Ministers (CEMCap).

The meeting served to finalize some details in preparation for the celebration and reading of the official decree, which will take place – along with the erection of the Northeastern European Conference – on September 11, 2023 in a meeting/celebration that will include all the major superiors involved in this reorganization of the conferences. At this third gathering of the future conference (one of which was an online meeting) the brothers aimed to articulate some of the more important and pressing issues that need addressing upon the establishment of the new body such as initial formation and its structure.

It was also necessary to work out a draft of statutes that could be approved ad experimentum to set a regulatory standard for all areas of the new conference, and to reflect on some of the technical aspects of transition from the previous conferences to the new one, including opportunities for animation of the Euro-Mediterranean Conference, not abandoning but promoting what had already been brought forth in the various parts of Europe. Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, offered a moment of reflection to the assembly and spoke of the relationship between “synodality and consecrated life”; our Minister General Br. Roberto Genuin then also imparted a few words.

In recent years, the General Minister and his Council, in dialogue with the major superiors of Europe, have together embraced the path toward communion and accepted the challenges posed by the times in which we live. “The Spirit blows in this direction, so I thank you for having welcomed its voice and for having promptly listened to it,” said the Minister.

This project responds to the reflection that has been taking place for years on the importance of collaboration and on the mission of continuing to fan the flame of our charism in the different regions of the world where we are present. The new Mediterranean Conference will be composed of 21 provinces, 3 custodies, 3 delegations and two domus presentiae, comprising more than a quarter of the Order's friars.
