Meeting of the New Ministers 2024

From May 13 to 18, 2024, twenty new provincial ministers and custodes, elected over the last year from across the Order, met in Frascati (Rome) for a time of formation and fraternal gathering. The weeklong meeting was organized by the General Curia. The Vicar General of the Order, Br. José Ángel Torres Rivera summarizes the objective of the course thus: “to enlighten the provincial ministers and custodes in the service they carry out in the circumscriptions to which they belong.” The meeting was attended by the General Minister and his Council, and with the various offices of the General Curia, who aimed to make it an occasion of consultancy for the ministers in the main areas that concern their ministry of animation of the friars. The new ministers gave themselves to learning what was necessary to efficiently execute the office to which they were called by the brothers; it was also an opportunity to meet the other ministers/custodes and get to know the Order in a broader way, interacting with the General Curia.

Among the topics presented were the figure and role of the Minister Provincial/Custos, the exercise of authority and obedience, formation, the work of the general procura, missionary animation, the general treasury, communication in the Order, assistance to the SFO, the St. Lawrence of Brindisi fraternities, collaboration in the Order, and the Postulation for the Causes of Saints. The new ministers were thus able to see the faces, and discover the skills of those who, working in the General Curia, can support and help them in their ministry to the brothers.

In the middle of the week, there was a visit to St. Lawrence of Brindisi International College and the various cultural institutions located on its campus. There was a regularity of prayer in various languages; and simple and friendly hospitality from the friars of the Frascati community, which set the tone for the meeting. The participants expressed their contentment with the experience of the formation week, for being able to share with fellow major superiors from various parts of the world the joys and concerns related to their service. In brief, they felt a sense of being unified in their diversity.

In the afternoon of the last day, the group went to the General Curia for a tour and to meet friars there, and then went to the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Via Veneto), where the remains of St. Felix of Cantalice, the first Capuchin saint, rest: here they celebrated the Eucharist on his feast day, the eve of Pentecost, invoking the Holy Spirit to help them in their service of animating the circumscriptions, and praying for the protection of St. Felix upon the brothers they are called to animate.
