Juridical Passage of two Custodies

On May 18, 2024, at the General Curia in Rome, the celebration of the juridical passage of two General Custodies, which became Provincial Custodies, took place. This is the General Custody of Nostra Signora della Speranza of Guatemala-Honduras-El Salvador, which has become a Custody of the Province of St. Mary of New York – New England; and of the General Custody of San Felice da Cantalice of Nicaragua-Costa Rica-Panama which became a Custody of the Province of Our Lady of Fatima of Central Brazil.

The celebration, which began and ended with prayer, was simple, but significant: present were the custodes involved in the new transfers, the provincial minister of Central Brazil (the provincial of New York-New England connected online as did several new ministers (during the New Minister’s Meeting in Frascati), the General Minister and his Council and some friars of the General Curia. Furthermore, more than 60 friars from the custodies and provinces involved participated online in the celebration.

Br. José Ángel Torres Rivera, Vicar General and Councilor of the CCH (Latin America) contextualized the celebration; then the history of the Capuchins in this geographical area of Central America was outlined, which led to the creation of the two General Custodies, and, finally, the General Minister read the decree of juridical passage of the two circumscriptions.

Br. Silvio do Socorro de Almeida Pereira, Councilor of the CCB (Brazil), and the General Minister himself, expressed satisfaction with the journey made thus far of communion and growth in mutual responsibility between the circumscriptions, and expressed the following wish: “These two provincial custodies were born under the tutelage of our good brother St. Felix of Cantalice, the first Capuchin saint; may he grant these friars to walk together, to support each other and to achieve holiness”.
