Br. Jerónimo Bórmida OFM Cap.

Br. Jerónimo Bórmida OFM Cap. (José Ruben Bórmida Rodríguez)

Born on February 9, 1939 at Montevideo, the future Br. Jerónimo entered the minor seminary of the Capuchin Friars at the young age of twelve. After the year of novitiate at San Francisco Carrasco he made his simple profession at the age of eighteen. This was followed by perpetual profession on February 10, 1959 and priestly ordination on July 21, 1963.

Apart from ecclesiastical studies, in which he graduated in theology from Freiburg and was awarded a doctorate in dogmatic theology at the theological faculty of St. Bonaventure in Rome, Br. Jerónimo also studied fine arts in Montevideo and painting and sculpture in Paris. He was a cofounder of ITUMs and of the department of theology in the theological faculty of Uruguay. After many assignments in his circumscription, he was elected general definitor and carried out this office from 1988 to 1994.

An able brother, intelligent and ironic, we remember him for being always on the cutting edge in the development of methods and forms of study. A prolific theologian and true authority in Franciscan studies, he goes before us after a life dedicated to the dissemination of the Capuchin charism and of putting his gifts at the service of the Order and the Church. The Lord called him to himself on February 11, 2017.
